Vaccinations

For the past several years, the veterinary community has debated whether or not our canine patients, i.e. your pets, have been over-vaccinated. On one hand, we have been suspicious that certain vaccinations last longer than a year, even though they are only approved for one-year duration. On the other hand, titer testing to prove extended duration is expensive for our clients.

At Arboretum View Animal Hospital, we want to do what’s best for our patients and our clients. That is why we are extremely excited to introduce a 3 year USDA approved Distemper vaccination. It offers proven, guaranteed 3-year protection for Distemper virus, Parovirus and Adenovirus (Hepatitus). This new immunization can replace the old vaccine at the next annual booster and is then given every 3 years.

If your dog is also due for his/her 3-year Rabies vaccination this year, we recommend postponing the new 3-year Distemper vaccination until next year. We do not want to over-stimulate your dog’s immune system.

Unfortunately, leptospira, corona virus and parainfluenza virus are still annual vaccinations. Leptospira and corona virus are given together in one vaccination. Parainfluenza is given in combination with the intranasal Bordetella vaccination (still one vaccination).

This change may seem sudden and confusing. Rest assured that we make changes with much deliberation and consideration. These changes are in the best interest of our patients and your beloved pets. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask our staff.
